Bhewma Falls: A Local’s Guide to Lachung’s Secret Wonder
Kuzu zangpo la and welcome! If you are reading this, chances are you are dreaming about the misty hills, towering peaks, and crisp mountain air of North Sikkim.
When travelers stay with us at our homestay, they always ask: "What shouldn't we miss on the way to the Yumthang Valley?" While everyone knows about the snow and the rhododendrons, there is one majestic, roaring neighbor of ours that demands you pull your car over, step out, and simply look up in awe.
Locals call it Bhewma Falls, but you might also hear it fondly referred to by travelers as the Amitabh Bachchan Falls or Bhim Nala Falls. Tucked right along the road connecting Chungthang to our beautiful valley of Lachung, it is easily one of the tallest, most dramatic waterfalls in all of Sikkim.
As someone who watches the seasons change right here in the lap of the Himalayas, let me share why this spot holds a piece of my heart, and how you can best experience it.
Why We Call It "The Red Snake"
In our local dialect, the word Bhewma translates to "Red Snake." Don't worry—you won't find any serpents slithering around! The name comes from the way the massive torrent of water twists and slithers down the jagged mountain rock from an unbelievable height of nearly 275 meters.
When the sun strikes the wet cliffs at a certain angle, the dark stones take on a deep, warm hue, making the white foam look like a mystical creature carving its way through the emerald-green forest. Later on, tourists started calling it the "Amitabh Bachchan Falls" simply because of its towering, gigantic height—a fun little nod that always makes our guests smile!
The Experience: Sound, Mist, and Mountain Magic
The best part about Bhewma Falls is that you will often hear it before you even see it. As your vehicle navigates the winding mountain roads, the distant, powerful thrum of rushing water fills the air.
Right in front of the cascade, there is a charming bamboo and wooden footbridge. Standing on this bridge is an experience you won't forget. As the water crashes down in three distinct steps, it creates a massive, refreshing cloud of misty spray. On a warm day, that cold mountain mist on your face feels incredibly rejuvenating after a long drive.
The surrounding cliffs are blanketed in thick, vibrant alpine greenery. It’s the perfect place to pause, breathe in the pure mountain oxygen, stretch your legs, and snap some of the most dramatic photos of your entire trip to North Sikkim.
A Few Insider Tips from Your Local Host:
Watch Your Step: The misty spray makes the wooden bridge and the rocks nearby quite damp. Make sure to wear shoes with good grip so you can explore safely.
Warm Up with Local Tea: Right near the falls, you’ll often find small, humble stalls run by friendly locals. Grab a steaming cup of tea or a hot bowl of Maggi. Enjoying a hot snack while watching a colossal waterfall is pure bliss!
Take It Slow: Don't just rush through for a quick selfie. Stand there for five minutes, listen to the roar of nature, and let the peace of the valley sink in.
The Best Time to Visit
Living here through the seasons, I can tell you the waterfall changes beautifully throughout the year:
March to May (Spring): The weather is lovely, flowers are blooming, and the melting snow keeps the waterfall flowing beautifully.
October to December (Autumn/Winter): The skies are crystal clear, offering stunning views of the snow-capped peaks alongside the falls.
July to September (Monsoon): This is when the waterfall is at its biggest and most powerful, though the mountain roads can be a bit adventurous!
Traveling Responsibly (A Request from a Local)
We love sharing our beautiful home with you! To help us keep North Sikkim pristine, please keep these quick tips in mind:
Ditch the Plastic: Packaged plastic water bottles are banned in North Sikkim. Bring a reusable flask—we’ll happily refill it with fresh mountain water at the homestay!
Keep it Clean: Please don't leave any wrappers or trash behind near the falls. Let's keep the trails beautiful for everyone.
Listen to Nature: Skip the portable speakers and enjoy the natural roar of the water and the mountain birds.
Support Small: Grab a hot tea or snack from the small stalls near the bridge. It goes a long way in supporting our local community!
